myspace scripts

hehe, I’ve actually been having a lot of fun on myspace now.
I’ve installed the greasemonkey extension and loaded a few scripts that strip the “pimp” from the page.
Everytime a page loads, it first loads everything, such as fuscia background with pink text (or white and grey) or something similar so that you can’t actually read it. I get to view the page as the author intended, but then the script strips it as soon as the page has finished loading, so that i can then actually read the text. I’m getting more kicks out of seeing how horrible the page looked, and then getting my version. It’s awesome!

I hate it how they’d ask: “You will be happy if you are poor” then you need to rate it. Load of crap. There are many different aspects to being happy and money is one shallow thing. To ask that question is shallow I think.

Online personalities and getting a job

fuck. this is the second time it has happened. I just had a pretty good post and then Performancing fucked out on me. I hate this.

Anyway, Now you can briefly read about what I had to say:

There is this article which deals with online personalities. I see myself has having quite a strong presence online, I’m on MSN, Flickr, Wordpress, Myspace and I live out of my Inbox. So I’d say I’m pretty woven into the fabric of the internet. However, none of my posts necessarily have to do with that one time when I did crack and went on a rampage with some dodgy skanks I picked up in Long street and ended up the next morning with a new tattoo and an STD. I’d like to know who actually posts things like that. Browsing myspace I’ve sortof come to understand it now, and you see a lot more of it, but it still is a bit weird.

Back to the central idea. The article deals with:

When a small consulting company in Chicago was looking to hire a summer
intern this month, the company’s president went online to check on a
promising candidate who had just graduated from the University of Illinois.

As some might have picked up, one of my friends is in trouble again over his blog. It has happened in the past as well that he had to “close the store” because of comments he made on his blog, and things that happened in real life. That’s probably one of the worst things you have to deal with when you are in positions of authority. One of our other friends doesn’t want to start a blog either, he has a myspace (here) but he doesn’t blog. He’s afraid an employer might read one of his blogs and not hire him. I’d love to get a weekly dose of his The Onion-styled humour. He has a column in Die Matie but that doesn’t suffice! Methinks it would be a much better idea to get a blog up and running and post from there. Then you can see your user count etc etc. Maybe even earn some money!

But he probably. Hopefully he soon sees the light and begins blogging. Until then we have to troll him into it. Dammit, I had such cool hyperlinks in the previous post but now I’m way too disheartened to try it again.

Ok, Continued.

Personally, I’d like to hire someone if they have a blog, or a myspace. Sure enough, I’m not in the position that I’m hiring CEO’s or something else high-flying, but I’d like to hire someone who is atleast a bit tech-savvy, and who has an online presence so I can get to know the person more.

Standard Bank Suig

My bank is Standard Bank. Ek bank al by hulle vir omtrent so 4 jaar en is op die Student Achiever package, nadat ek verander van die Sum(1) pakket. Nou, ek betaal hierdie maand sover R111 bank kostes. Dit is belaglik. regtig. amper so belaglik soos hierdie:

Cyclepods

This is a shameless copy of a post from Coolhunting, well, atleast the bottom part.I’ve been saying for years and years (as long as Stellenbosch University has managed to torment and entertain me) that we need to figure out a way that bicycles are used more.
Over at the D.School in Stanford, which I’ve blogged about earlier, they had a project that they tried to Spread Firefox (as part of their Creating Infectious Action classes). I’d like to be involved with something similar at the university, that is aimed at Spreading Bicycle use. Damn it would be cool.

(Sorry i have no idea why that top part is in bold)

My theory on bicycle use at Stellenbosch University:
People don’t cycle because it is “oh so tres uncool’ which is understandable. The only bikes available really are these kinds of shitty Raleigh mountain bikes.

http://www.island.net/~bikelife/Outland.jpg

Who the hell wants to be seen on one of those?
Masons has started selling the Schwinn Stingray, this one:

Which is a pretty slick bike, but it’s too bling. Most people won’t want to ride this, it’s just too flash I think. We somehow need to find a way that makes biking cool. Because remember, in a sense you are competing against a new Golf GTI, since that is what kids are driving around on campus lately. And driving one of those puppies is “oh so tres cool”.

So a culture of “cool” needs to be created around bikes. It’s much easier to bling your bike than it is your car. Besides, if all things go according to plan, Victoria street may be closed down for cars and then the only way around is going to be by bike.

I’d still like to see more of the oldschool Post-Office bikes being used. If anyone knows of somewhere that I can get hold of one it would be much appreciated!

Here’s the story on bike pods from Coolhunting (btw, that’s a Scott Genius hanging on the left… I got one!):

Cyclepods

Cyclepod-1

The steadily-rising price of oil, and, in London, a congestion charge
of £8 for cars entering the centre of the city, mean more and
more people are traveling by bike. Cheap, quick and relatively healthy
(if you don’t suck in lungfuls of fumes) the downsides are being caught
out by the British weather and where to put your bike when you arrive.

So with that in mind, James Steward and Natalie Connell are deserving winners of this year’s UK’s Young Entrepreneurs Of The Year Award for their Cyclepod.

An intelligent, space-saving design, the pods vertically store
eight bicycles within a two-meter diameter, which is half the room
needed by traditional storage units, according to the makers. The
design also lets cyclists lock both the bike’s frame and front wheel so
they can’t be stolen, and the umbrella will at least keep the rain off
when you’re not riding. There’s no faulting the modernist design
either, which is already cropping up in certain parts of London, and at
the headquarters of multinationals like Pepsi.

Yet another conference

Kobus Ehlers and myself are speaking at another conference in August. Our topic is: How electronic communication has changed the academic and social life of a student.

In going with the whole Student Representative thing, I'd like some input from the student community. I was thinking of specifically talking about blogging (how many students have blogs?), Myspace (how many student use Myspace as a medium of communication? What kind of student uses it?), RSS feeds (how do students use RSS feeds?) and if there are any other Web2.0 Apps that students are using, even things like MSN, and how do you use this to communicate. I'd like to make an argument that the university should use more Web2.0 platforms. We need more online interaction. Sure, there are the WebCT bulletin boards, but that that doesn't serve as enough online interaction.

So, I'm asking you, click through and leave a comment on this post with how you use the internet. You can use these few topics:

Take note, I'd specifically like Stellenbosch students to comment, other people are more than welcome to leave comments and suggestions, maybe just say if you are from somewhere else. I'd like some comment on the questions and structure of the paper.

E-mail (How often do you use e-mail? How much of your daily activity results from your inbox? Are you on mailing lists?)

Instant Messaging (stuff like MSN, AOL, even Myspace can fall under this. Do you use IM? How many of your friends IM? Do you use IM to make plans for the day?)

Blogging (Do you have a blog? Do you read blogs? What is your posting frequency?)

Forum activity (How active are you on forums? Do you use forums? Are forum topics a central part of you interest field, or do you use them to keep up to date with periphery activities?

Myspace (Do you have a myspace account? How often do you use it to keep up to date with your friends? Do you pimp your page? How do you interact with other people? If you don't have an account, do you sometimes browse through other peoples pages?… note, my myspace interaction is low, so I can't really say on this one!)

Other Web2.0 (Flickr, Zoomr, Pidjin, Facebook, etc) (Do you use any other Web2.0 platforms? How do you use them?)
