Five different germs with hooked tails - there I’m going for a whipworms or tapeworms - that are found in the common man’s bog - hence the toilet seat.

Each social network (green blob) has a different interface (UI, API, etc). The toilet seat knows how to interact with each and every interface, and then provide a well-documented interface as a proxy for each network.

Then a service, which wants to get data from social networks, need only learn how to interact with the toilet seat, rather than interacting with 100 different social network interfaces.

    spot on Pat :)

It would make the process of handing over contact details, friends lists etc much easier and secure.

Which particular (SN) toilet seat are you speaking about?

  12. Uno

    31|Mar|2008

    Joey,
    all SN’s :)

Ok, I assumed the green blobs as SN’s.. and the toilet seat as your single all encompassing SN API (the toilet seat to rule them all) but is this an existing SN or simply an interface someone is making, cos I’d lurv to know more..

I’d love to be able to tell you more Joey, but unfortunately at the moment we don’t even have a good name for it! You’ve helped with that part though :)

The seat (I’m going to change the graphic…) is the universal API, which makes it easier for other services to consume - they only need to roll authentication for one network in instead of multiple ones.

I take it you’ve seen the likes of 8hands.com ? So you will make a SN Meebo’esque interface then.. nice! I have tons of projects that could benefit from something like this! Can we get involved? I am sure we could add value to the project (outside of name brainstorming..)

[...] Dammit, why does their Toilet Seat look better than my Toilet Seat? [...]

Aliens? That is sooo far-fetched. The message is very simple: Toilets attract a variety of germs.

“Toilets attract a variety of germs.”

Sounds like a good metaphor for most of the Internet, not just social networking sites.
